Your Follower Count Doesn’t Matter…Kinda.

I have good news and bad news about your follower count on social media.

The good news is that you don’t need tens of thousands of followers to have a massively profitable brand. The bad news is that you can have tens, or even hundreds, of thousands of followers and never make a single sale if you’re not strategic about the way you use social media.

Your personal social media brand isn’t about amassing thousands of followers who may have no genuine interest in your content or services; it's about cultivating a community of engaged, loyal supporters who become paying clients.

That being said, here are three ways to make sure you are building a profitable social media audience:

INCLUDE A CALL-TO-ACTION IN ALL OF YOUR POSTS

I say this all the time, and I’ll say it again because it’s THAT important: If you fail to include a call-to-action in your content, you are warming leads for your competition.

Your audience doesn’t know they have the opportunity to work with you if you don’t tell them. Education and value is so important in your content, but if that’s all you’re offering, your audience has no idea that you offer so much more.

Not every post needs to include a CTA that prompts a direct sale, but every post should include a CTA that puts them one step closer to becoming a paid client.

POST MEANINGFUL CONTENT

Just as your follower count is about quality and not quantity, your content needs to be purposeful and valuable to your audience.

Don’t get me wrong, you need to be consistently posting to social media at least once a day to help your overall visibility and engagement, but posting “just to post,” isn’t going to get you far at all.

The goal in every piece of content you post should be to establish expertise and authority in your field. You want to build trust with your audience, positioning your brand as a reliable source of valuable information, as that is ultimately what leads to conversions and sales.

ENGAGE WITH YOUR IDEAL CLIENTS AND REFERRAL SOURCES

If you’re hitting “Post,” and immediately closing out of social media, you’re missing a huge opportunity to curate your audience and establish trust.

It’s important to not only show up on social media in terms of creating content, but to also engage with your audience and ideal clients.

Replying to comments in your own posts, engaging with the content of your ideal client, or even striking up conversations with content creators that could serve as referral sources to you are all ways to make sure that you’re creating an audience with genuine interest in your brand and services.

MAIN TAKEAWAY

While follower count matters in terms of visibility, it’s important to make sure that you are building an audience of loyal and interested followers that fit the description of your ideal client.

The goal is to have a social media strategy using some of the tips I listed above that prevents you from becoming “likes-rich and profit-poor.”

You have so many great things to say! Make sure they’re being heard by the right ears.
